Iris at her first Harrengière fitting

Photographer unidentified. Miss Iris Cockatoo is shown standing upon a fitting platform while Harrengière workroom staff adjust an unfinished evening gown. Fashion sketches, fabric samples and dressmaking materials remain visible at the right of the photograph. The precise date and occasion for which the gown was commissioned are not recorded. The photograph appears to have been taken sometime after Miss Cockatoo’s twenty-first birthday and represents the earliest known evidence of Harrengière designing expressly for her, rather than supplying garments through an exhibition or household account. It marks the beginning of a professional association that would continue through Miss Cockatoo’s expedition wardrobe, public appearances and eventual work as a designer.
Iris Cockatoo stands on a fitting platform while one woman adjusts the gown’s hem and another holds fabric nearby.
